About Us
What is a Credit Union? It is a financial co-operative, owned and democratically controlled by its members. Credit Unions serve the financial needs of the community on a not-for-profit basis. A Credit Union can help its members to achieve financial independence through regular savings and fair and affordable access to loans.Each Credit Union is led by a voluntary Board of Directors, elected by the members at its Annual General Meeting. AimOur aim is to fulfil the financial needs of our members by providing excellent products and services based on mutual trust and integrity.
A Short History of Strabane Credit Union
Nov 1964 A study group meets with the intention of forming a Credit Union in Strabane. Dec 1964 Inaugural meeting held in the Townhall, at which the first Board of Directors is appointed. Dr. Bernard Deeney appointed first President and �24 - 15s is raised in shares by the 26 members present. Mar 1965 Directors accept an offer of premises from Mr. Gerald McShane at the Bowling Green. May 1965 Decision taken to offer loans to members - none to exceed �25. Jul 1965 First 4 loans are issued, totalling �110. Jun 1967 New premises purchased at Main Street. Apr 1969 First paid staff appointed - Mr Eddie Devlin and Mr Pat Smyth. Jul 1970 Ediie Devlin appointed as first Manager of Strabane Credit Union. Apr 1975 Mary Smyth succeeds Eddie Devlin as Manager. Mar 1977 Breidge McAuley appointed Manager upon the resignation of Mary Smyth. Jun 1978 Credit Union moves to new premises at Bowling Green. Nov 1985 Total shares reach �1 million. Sep 1991 Shares top �2 million. Apr 1999 Credit Union acquires adjoining property and builds modern-day premises. Sep 1999 Membership exceeds 6,000, with savings of �8.7 million and loans of �7.1 million.
Today... Membership of 9,200 along with 1,600 juvenile savers. Savings in excess of �21 million and loans of over �14 million. Five full-time and six part-time staff employed. Since its formation Strabane Credit Union has issued loans totalling in excess of �85 million.
